1) Trusted and Reliable Electrician in Cove Green, Farnborough
I’m Darren May, the electrician behind MAYTRICS LIMITED. We carry out smaller electrical upgrades throughout Cove Green and Farnborough, including replacement sockets, USB socket upgrades, additional sockets, switches and general electrical maintenance.
One recent job involved a repeat customer at a property directly opposite Cove Recreation Ground. They had standard double socket outlets positioned either side of the master bed, but once their bedside lamps and mobile phone chargers were plugged in, both 13A outlets were occupied.
We replaced the existing accessories with double socket outlets incorporating USB charging ports. This allowed the customers to charge their phones directly from the USB connections while keeping both conventional 13A outlets free for reading lights and other equipment. It was a simple upgrade, completed within around 30 minutes, but made the bedroom considerably more practical without needing to install additional socket points.
Back to top2) A Real USB Socket Upgrade in Cove Green
This particular Cove Green project was for a customer we had carried out electrical work for several times previously.
The existing arrangement consisted of a standard double socket on either side of the master bed. Each socket was being used for a bedside lamp and a mobile phone charger, meaning there was no spare 13A outlet available.
Rather than installing completely new socket positions and altering the fixed wiring unnecessarily, we suggested replacing the existing accessories with double sockets incorporating USB charging outlets.
On arrival, we assessed the existing sockets and wiring before safely isolating the circuit. The original accessories were removed, the existing connections were inspected and the new USB sockets were installed.
Once fitted, we carried out the appropriate checks and testing before returning the circuit to service.
The result was a straightforward improvement that gave the customer dedicated phone charging while retaining both 13A socket outlets on each side of the bed.
Back to top3) Why Upgrade to USB Sockets?
USB socket outlets can be useful in bedrooms, home offices, kitchens and other areas where phones, tablets and smaller electronic devices are regularly charged.
One of the main advantages is convenience. Instead of using a separate plug-in USB charger, compatible devices can be connected directly to the socket accessory.
For the Cove Green customer, the main benefit was freeing up the existing socket outlets. Their bedside lamps could remain plugged into the 13A outlets while their phones charged independently.
Where the existing socket position is already suitable, replacing the accessory can also be more cost-effective and less disruptive than installing additional socket points.
Before recommending this type of upgrade, however, we still assess the existing circuit and wiring. A new accessory should only be installed where the existing electrical installation is suitable.
Back to top4) Our Process
- Initial Enquiry
This particular project was for a repeat customer, so the initial enquiry was very straightforward.
The customer contacted me by email or WhatsApp and explained that they wanted the existing sockets beside their bed replaced with USB socket outlets.
Because we had worked at the property before and already had their customer details, there was no need to repeat the full enquiry process.
- Written Estimate
The work was relatively straightforward and fell within our standard minimum charge, so a separate site survey was not required.
We provided a written estimate detailing the proposed work and associated costs. The customer was able to review and accept the estimate online.
- Booking the Work
Once the estimate had been accepted, we arranged a convenient appointment.
Because this was a small electrical maintenance job, we were able to schedule and complete the work within approximately a week of the original enquiry.
- Installation
On the day of the appointment, we inspected the existing sockets and wiring before isolating the circuit safely.
The original double sockets were removed and replaced with new double socket outlets incorporating USB charging ports.
The existing conductors and terminations were checked as part of the installation.
- Testing and Completion
Once the new sockets were installed, we carried out the appropriate electrical checks and functional testing before restoring the circuit to service.
The work itself took approximately 30 minutes.
- Invoice and Aftercare
Following completion, we issued the customer with their invoice, which was settled promptly.
As with our other customers, they continued to receive our follow-up and aftercare emails, together with a link should they wish to leave feedback about the service.
For repeat customers, we try to keep the process simple. Where we already know the property and have enough information to understand the work, we can often quote remotely and arrange the booking without an unnecessary survey visit.
Back to top5) What’s Included in the Price?
Our standard minimum charge is £115 + VAT (£138 including VAT) and covers up to the first hour on site.
For this particular Cove Green project, that covered the labour required to:
- Attend the property
- Assess the existing socket outlets and wiring
- Safely isolate the circuit
- Remove the existing accessories
- Install the replacement USB sockets
- Check and tighten the electrical connections
- Carry out appropriate electrical testing
- Functionally check the completed installation
- Return the circuit to service
The USB sockets themselves were supplied by MAYTRICS LIMITED at approximately £32 + VAT each and were charged in addition to the labour.
If additional time or unexpected remedial work had been required, we would have discussed this with the customer before proceeding.
Back to top6) Materials and Brands We Use
For sockets, switches and other wiring accessories, we generally recommend Click by Scolmore.
We consider this to be a good mid-range product range that offers a sensible balance between quality, reliability, appearance and cost.
We deliberately avoid selecting the cheapest electrical accessories simply to reduce a quotation. In our experience, very low-budget products do not always offer the same quality of finish, durability or feel in everyday use.
There are more expensive decorative and premium ranges available, and we are happy to discuss these where a customer wants a particular finish.
For a standard installation, however, Click products are a range we regularly use and are comfortable recommending.
Because the USB sockets on this project were supplied by MAYTRICS LIMITED, the products benefit from the applicable manufacturer’s warranty. Our installation is also covered by our 12-month workmanship guarantee.
We are happy to install suitable customer-supplied accessories where requested, but products we have not supplied ourselves are not covered by our own product warranty.
Back to top7) Common Problems We See
A common issue in many properties is simply that the original socket arrangement no longer suits the way the room is used.
A socket that was perfectly adequate when originally installed may now be expected to power bedside lamps, phone chargers, tablets, smart watches and other electronic equipment.
This can result in customers relying on multiple plug-in chargers, adapters or extension leads when a more practical socket arrangement may be available.
We also occasionally encounter poorly installed replacement electrical accessories where connections have not been tightened correctly or where DIY alterations have been carried out without appropriate testing.
Replacing a socket may appear straightforward, but the condition of the circuit, polarity, earthing and existing terminations still need to be considered.
Our approach is to assess the existing installation first, carry out the alteration safely and complete the appropriate checks before returning the circuit to normal use.

How long does a USB socket upgrade take?
A straightforward replacement can take around 30 minutes, as with this Cove Green project. The time may increase if the existing wiring requires remedial work or access is difficult.

Are the sockets guaranteed?
Products supplied by MAYTRICS LIMITED benefit from the applicable manufacturer’s warranty, while our installation is covered by our 12-month workmanship guarantee.

Yes. MAYTRICS LIMITED is NICEIC registered, Part P certified, City & Guilds Level 3 qualified and Which? Trusted Trader approved.
If your existing sockets no longer suit the way you use your bedroom, home office or living space, send me a few photographs and explain what you would like to achieve.
