1) Trusted Electrician in Farnborough
I’m Darren May, the electrician behind MAYTRICS LIMITED. I carry out replacement light fittings, electrical maintenance and smaller household electrical jobs throughout Cove, Farnborough and the surrounding areas.
One recent job in Cove involved replacing an existing bathroom light with a new decorative fitting supplied by the homeowner. Although changing a light may appear straightforward, bathrooms require particular consideration because the fitting needs to be suitable for its location and the existing wiring needs to be assessed before anything is connected.
When we arrived, we first inspected the customer’s new fitting and checked the existing wiring. Once we were satisfied that the replacement was suitable, we safely isolated the lighting circuit, removed the original fitting and installed the customer-supplied replacement. The completed installation was then checked and functionally tested before being returned to service.
Back to top2) A Real Example of Our Electrical Work in Cove
This Cove project was a relatively small electrical maintenance job and was completed within approximately 30 minutes.
The customer had already selected and purchased the replacement bathroom light before our appointment. Our job was therefore to assess whether the fitting was suitable for the existing installation and then install it correctly.
Before removing the original fitting, we checked the wiring arrangement and safely isolated the circuit. Once the old light had been removed, we inspected the available conductors and existing connections.
During the installation, we added sleeving to the circuit protective conductor and used brown sleeving to correctly identify the switched line conductor. These are small details, but correctly identifying conductors is important both for the immediate installation and for anybody who may work on the circuit in the future.
The replacement fitting was fixed securely to the plasterboard ceiling using three appropriate fixings before the electrical connections were completed.
After installation, the lighting circuit was re-energised and the fitting was functionally tested to confirm correct operation.
Back to top3) Installing Customer-Supplied Light Fittings
We are happy to install customer-supplied bathroom lights, pendant fittings, wall lights and other electrical accessories where they are suitable for the installation.
Lighting is very personal, so many customers prefer to choose their own fittings rather than asking us to select the style for them.
Before buying a bathroom light, however, it is worth checking:
- Whether the fitting is designed for bathroom use
- Where within the bathroom it will be installed
- Whether the fitting requires an earth connection
- The size and weight of the fitting
- How it needs to be fixed to the ceiling or wall
- Whether the existing wiring is compatible
- Whether assembly is required before installation
If you are unsure, sending us the product information or photographs before the appointment can help us identify any obvious concerns.
Back to top4) Why We Check the Existing Wiring First
Replacing a light fitting is not simply a case of removing one product and connecting another.
We first need to understand the existing wiring arrangement.
Lighting circuits may include permanent line conductors, switched lines, neutral conductors and circuit protective conductors. Depending on the age and design of the installation, the conductor colours alone do not always tell you what each wire does.
This is why electrical work should not be approached by simply matching brown to brown, blue to blue or older red and black conductors by colour.
During the Cove installation, the switched line was correctly identified using brown sleeving and the CPC was also appropriately sleeved before the new fitting was installed.
These small steps help leave the installation correctly identified and easier to understand during future maintenance.
Back to top5) Our Process
- Tell Us About the Work
The easiest way to contact us is through our website enquiry form.
You can describe the light fitting you would like replaced and attach photographs of both the existing fitting and the replacement you have purchased.
Customers can also contact me by telephone, text message or WhatsApp. Where required, I may direct you to the website form so we have all the necessary information recorded.
- We Review the Enquiry
I personally review the details and photographs provided.
For straightforward replacement light fittings, we can often provide an estimated cost without needing a separate site visit.
If the fitting appears unusually heavy, complicated or unsuitable for the location, I may ask for further information before confirming the booking.
- Estimate and Booking
A straightforward light-fitting replacement normally falls under our standard minimum charge of £115 + VAT (£138 including VAT), covering up to the first hour on site.
Once the estimate has been accepted, we arrange a convenient appointment.
Customers receive booking confirmations and reminders, together with a notification when we are on our way.
- Assessment and Safe Isolation
When we arrive, we inspect the replacement fitting and assess the existing installation.
We then safely isolate the relevant lighting circuit before removing the old fitting.
If we find an issue that prevents the new fitting being installed safely, we explain the problem before carrying out any additional work.
- Installation
The new fitting is securely mounted and electrically connected.
For this Cove job, only three screws, three plasterboard fixings and a small amount of identification sleeving were required.
- Testing and Completion
Once the fitting has been installed, we carry out the appropriate checks before re-energising the circuit and functionally testing the new light.
Where electrical documentation is appropriate for the work carried out, this is provided following completion and payment.
Back to top6) What’s Included in the Price?
Our standard minimum charge for smaller electrical jobs is £115 + VAT, or £138 including VAT, covering up to the first hour on site.
For a straightforward bathroom light replacement, this includes:
- Attendance at the property
- Assessment of the replacement fitting
- Inspection of the existing wiring
- Safe isolation
- Removal of the old fitting
- Installation of the new customer-supplied fitting
- Checking and tightening electrical connections
- Appropriate inspection and testing
- Functional testing after re-energising
- Up to the first hour of labour
For this particular Cove project, no significant materials were required.
We used three screws, three plasterboard fixings and small amounts of CPC and switched-line identification sleeving. These are common consumables that we carry with us.
And, on this particular occasion, the customer made us a lovely cup of tea and supplied a KitKat, so we decided the screws, fixings and sleeving were on us!
If additional materials or more than one hour are required, these would normally be charged in addition and explained in accordance with the estimate.
Back to top7) Customer-Supplied Products and Our Guarantee
Our workmanship is covered by a 12-month workmanship guarantee.
However, when a customer supplies their own light fitting, we cannot provide a product warranty on that fitting because we did not purchase or supply it.
If the fitting itself later develops a manufacturing fault, the customer would need to contact the retailer or manufacturer under the product warranty.
Our guarantee still covers the quality of our installation.
Where MAYTRICS LIMITED supplies an electrical accessory, it is also covered by the applicable manufacturer’s warranty.
Back to top8) Common Problems We Encounter
One issue we regularly see is customers purchasing a replacement light before checking whether it is suitable for the existing electrical installation.
For example, some decorative fittings may require an earth connection, while the existing lighting circuit may not have a usable circuit protective conductor available at that point.
Bathroom lights also need to be suitable for their intended location.
Another common problem is DIY light-fitting replacement where conductors are disconnected before their function has been identified.
This can lead to:
- Switched lines being mistaken for neutrals
- Incorrect connections
- Circuit breakers tripping
- Other lights on the circuit no longer working
- Earth conductors being left disconnected
- Loose connections
- Unsuitable fixings being used
- Damage to ceiling surfaces
Poor workmanship can often mean paying for the job twice: once for the original attempt and again for an electrician to investigate and correct it.
Our approach is to inspect first, safely isolate, install the fitting correctly and test the work before leaving.
Back to top9) Materials and Equipment We Use
This particular job required very little material because the customer supplied the light.
We carry essential fixings, electrical sleeving, connectors and other commonly required consumables in our tool bags and van so that smaller jobs can usually be completed without needing to leave site.
For electrical accessories that we supply ourselves, we generally use good-quality mid-range products rather than selecting solely on price.
We regularly use Click wiring accessories because they provide a clean finish and offer a good balance between quality, cost and availability.

Back to top11) FAQs
How much does it cost to replace a bathroom light in Cove?
Our standard minimum charge is £138 including VAT and covers up to the first hour on site. A straightforward customer-supplied bathroom light replacement will often fall within this minimum charge where no additional work or materials are required.
Can I supply my own bathroom light?
Yes. We are happy to install customer-supplied fittings provided they are suitable for the intended location and compatible with the existing installation.
Is my customer-supplied light covered by your guarantee?
Our workmanship is covered for 12 months, but we cannot guarantee a product that we did not supply. Any manufacturing fault with a customer-supplied fitting would need to be dealt with by the retailer or manufacturer.
How long does replacing a bathroom light take?
A straightforward replacement may take around 30 minutes, as with the recent Cove project. More complicated fittings, assembly requirements, poor existing wiring or difficult access can increase the installation time.
What happens if you find a problem with the wiring?
We will explain the issue before carrying out additional work. If the fitting cannot be installed safely without remedial work, we will discuss the available options and any additional cost first.
Can you quote from photographs?
Often, yes. Clear photographs of the existing fitting, replacement product and surrounding area can sometimes give us enough information to provide an estimated cost without a separate survey.
Are you NICEIC registered?
Yes. MAYTRICS LIMITED is NICEIC registered, Part P certified, City & Guilds Level 3 qualified and Which? Trusted Trader approved.
If you have bought a new bathroom light and would like it installed safely in Cove or Farnborough, send me a photograph of the existing fitting and a link or photo of the replacement. In many cases, I can review everything remotely and provide an estimated cost without a separate survey visit.
