1) Smart Electric Radiator Installation in Earley

A couple of years ago, I was contacted by a homeowner in Earley who had found MAYTRICS LIMITED through Checkatrade. Their property was heated using an older off-peak storage heating system, and they wanted to replace three storage heaters with modern smart electric radiators that gave them greater control over when individual rooms were heated.

I’m Darren May from MAYTRICS LIMITED. I’ve worked in the electrical industry for more than 20 years, we’re NICEIC registered and Which? Trusted Trader endorsed, and we have over 200 Google reviews and approximately 240 Checkatrade reviews.

For this particular project, I visited the property first to assess the existing electrical arrangement and understand what the customer wanted. We subsequently removed all three storage heaters, dealt with the old heating supplies as required and installed three new smart electric radiators. The work was completed within a day.

2) A Real Storage Heater Replacement in Earley

This particular job started through Checkatrade.

The customer had an existing off-peak electric storage heating system but wanted to move towards a more controllable form of electric heating.

There were three storage heaters to remove and replace.

Rather than trying to price the entire job from a few photographs, I arranged a site visit. With this type of work, I prefer to look at the existing electrical supplies and understand exactly what the customer wants before putting a quotation together.

Traditional storage heaters and modern electric radiators don’t necessarily have the same electrical or control requirements, so I don’t assume that a new radiator can simply be connected in exactly the same way as the heater coming off the wall.

Following the survey, we provided a written estimate. The customer was happy with the proposed work and price, accepted the estimate and we arranged a suitable installation date.

3) Removing the Three Existing Storage Heaters

On the day of the installation, the customer had kindly cleared the working areas around each of the heaters.

That might sound like a small detail, but it makes a genuine difference. It meant we could bring our tools and equipment into the property and get started without first having to move furniture and personal belongings away from each working area.

We removed all three existing storage heaters from their positions.

The old off-peak heating arrangement was no longer going to be used, so we also dealt with the associated electrical supplies as part of changing the property over to its new heating arrangement.

It’s worth mentioning that exactly what’s required electrically will depend on the property.

I wouldn’t recommend assuming that an old storage heater supply is automatically suitable for a new smart radiator. That’s one of the reasons I prefer to survey multi-radiator conversions before quoting.

4) Installing the New Smart Electric Radiators

Once the old heaters had been removed and the electrical arrangements dealt with, we installed the three replacement smart electric radiators.

One of the brands I particularly like for this type of work is Rointe.

I’ve fitted their electric radiators because I’ve found them straightforward to physically install and relatively simple to set up afterwards.

The models I’ve worked with are supplied with a cardboard mounting template.

Rather than repeatedly measuring between mounting points and transferring those dimensions to the wall, the template helps us accurately mark the positions for the mounting brackets before drilling and fixing the radiator.

It’s a relatively small feature, but it’s one of those details you appreciate when you actually install the products.

5) Why I Like Rointe Electric Radiators

The installation isn’t the only reason I like using Rointe.

The models I’ve installed have come with a factory-fitted moulded plug, meaning the manufacturer’s supply lead can be plugged into a suitable socket rather than unnecessarily altering the original lead.

The controls are also relatively straightforward.

Depending on the particular model, the heating can be programmed to operate at different times throughout the day and on different days of the week.

That’s useful because a room doesn’t necessarily need heating continuously simply because the property is occupied.

For example, a customer can create a heating schedule around when they normally use a particular room.

Newer smart models can also provide Wi-Fi and app-based control, depending on the model selected.

This allows the customer to control compatible radiators remotely from their phone. If they’re travelling home and want a room to begin warming before they arrive, for example, they can have that additional level of control.

I would always check the features of the specific model being supplied rather than suggesting that every Rointe radiator has identical functionality.

6) Storage Heaters and Smart Electric Radiators Aren’t the Same Thing

The Earley job wasn’t simply a cosmetic replacement.

Traditional off-peak storage heating works differently from a modern direct-acting electric radiator.

That’s why the existing electrical installation needs to form part of the conversation.

When I’m assessing this type of project, I’m interested in what is already supplying the heaters, how the new equipment is intended to be powered and what alterations are actually required.

Sometimes the most useful part of a site survey is identifying what doesn’t need changing as well as what does.

I don’t want to include unnecessary electrical alterations simply because we’re fitting new equipment.

Equally, I won’t assume an existing arrangement is suitable simply because there’s already a cable or connection in roughly the right place.

7) What Happens When You Contact MAYTRICS?

7.0.1) Initial enquiry

This customer found us through our Checkatrade profile and contacted us about the heating upgrade.

When you contact MAYTRICS, you deal directly with me, Darren.

We don’t have an AI receptionist or an automated telephone system trying to handle technical electrical enquiries.

I’ll ask enough questions to understand what you’re considering and determine what information I need next.

7.0.2) Site survey

For a project involving several storage heaters, I would normally recommend visiting the property before providing a firm quotation.

The Earley customer had three heaters being replaced, so seeing the installation first meant I could properly assess the work rather than making assumptions.

7.0.3) Written estimate

Following the survey, we provided a written estimate detailing the proposed work.

The customer accepted the estimate, and we then arranged a suitable date for the installation.

7.0.4) Installation day

The customer had cleared all three working areas ready for us.

We removed the old storage heaters, carried out the required electrical work and installed the three replacement smart electric radiators.

7.0.5) Checks and handover

Once installed, we carried out the appropriate electrical checks and made sure the new radiators were operating correctly.

Where smart controls or programming are available, having relatively straightforward controls also makes it easier to explain the basic operation to the customer before we leave.

7.0.6) How Long Does It Take?

The Earley project involving three storage heaters and three replacement electric radiators was completed within one day.

That’s a useful example rather than a promise that every three-radiator installation will take exactly the same amount of time.

The duration depends on the number and type of existing heaters, accessibility, the existing electrical arrangement, the replacement radiators and whether any additional circuit alterations are required.

Those variables are another reason why I prefer to survey larger heating conversions before confirming the quotation.

8) How Much Does Electric Radiator Installation Cost?

Our standard minimum charge starts at £138 including VAT, covering attendance and up to the first hour on site.

However, I wouldn’t present a three-radiator conversion such as this Earley project as a £138 job.

For larger planned works involving several radiators and alterations to an existing storage-heating arrangement, I would normally carry out a survey and provide a written quotation based on the actual scope of work.

The price can depend on factors including:

  • Number of heaters being removed
  • Number and type of replacement radiators
  • Existing electrical supplies
  • Any circuit alterations required
  • Accessibility
  • Whether MAYTRICS is supplying the radiators
  • Any additional electrical work agreed during the survey

This gives the customer something meaningful to compare rather than an artificially low headline price that doesn’t represent the complete job.

9) Common Problems We See With Electrical Alterations

Across the electrical work we carry out, one recurring issue is DIY electrical work.

There is a huge amount of information available online, but following a YouTube video isn’t the same as understanding the installation you’re working on, knowing whether the proposed alteration is appropriate and being able to test the completed work.

The problem isn’t necessarily the individual task shown in the video. It’s everything the video can’t tell you about the electrical installation in front of you.

We also occasionally encounter electrical work that appears to have been rushed.

Different electricians will naturally charge different amounts, and a lower quotation doesn’t automatically mean poor workmanship.

However, if a job is priced without allowing enough time to complete the work properly, it can create pressure to rush the installation.

I prefer to price work so that we have sufficient time to carry out the agreed electrical work and the appropriate checks rather than competing solely on who can produce the lowest number.

10) Why Customers Choose MAYTRICS LIMITED

I’m a City & Guilds Level 3 qualified electrician with more than 20 years’ experience in the electrical industry.

MAYTRICS LIMITED is also:

  • NICEIC registered
  • Which? Trusted Trader endorsed
  • Backed by over 200 Google reviews
  • Backed by approximately 240 Checkatrade reviews
  • Covered by a 12-month workmanship guarantee

Where we supply electrical products, they also benefit from the applicable manufacturer’s warranty.

For me, though, one of the biggest differences is communication.

When you telephone about a job, you’re speaking directly with the electrician who will be involved in assessing and carrying out the work.

We generally aim to respond to enquiries the same day or within 24 hours of first contact. This is our response time rather than a promise that the work itself will be completed within 24 hours.

11) Other Electrical Work in Earley

While this page focuses specifically on electric radiators and storage heater replacement, we can also help with other electrical alterations and improvements around the property.

That includes consumer unit replacements and fuse board upgrades, circuit alterations, sockets, switches, lights, kitchen electrics, bathroom electrics, extractor fans, smoke detectors, doorbells and new electrical installations.

We also undertake electrical work for garden rooms, outside sockets, outside lighting, security lights, motion-sensor lighting and EV charger installations.

If you’re already planning several electrical improvements, mention them when you enquire. I can then advise whether it makes sense to assess them during the same survey.

12) What to Expect if You’re Comparing Quotes

If you’re currently searching for an electric radiator installer near me and comparing quotations, I’d recommend making sure each electrician is pricing the same scope of work.

For example, is the quotation simply for hanging the new radiators, or does it include removing the existing storage heaters and assessing or altering the electrical supplies?

For our Earley customer, the job involved three existing heaters being removed, the old heating arrangement being dealt with electrically, and three new smart radiators being installed and checked.

That’s the scope I’d want clearly understood before comparing one quotation with another.

13) FAQs

How much does electric radiator installation cost in Earley?

Our standard minimum charge starts from £138 including VAT and covers attendance and up to the first hour on site, but a multi-radiator conversion will normally be quoted individually. For a project such as our Earley job involving three storage heaters, I’d usually survey the property first and provide a written quotation.

Can you replace old storage heaters with smart electric radiators?

Yes, subject to assessing the existing installation and the requirements of the replacement heaters. On our Earley project, we removed three old storage heaters and installed three modern smart electric radiators.

Which electric radiators do you recommend?

One brand I like installing is Rointe because I’ve found the products straightforward to mount, set up and explain to customers. Features vary between models, but newer smart versions can include programmable controls and Wi-Fi/app functionality.

Can I control my electric radiators from my phone?

Some modern smart electric radiators provide Wi-Fi and app control, depending on the model selected. This can allow you to adjust compatible radiators remotely, including starting the heating before you arrive home.

Can you use the existing storage heater electrical supply?

That needs to be assessed rather than assumed. Storage heaters and modern electric radiators can have different supply and control requirements, which is why I normally look at the existing installation before quoting for a larger conversion.

How long does it take to replace storage heaters?

Our real Earley installation involving three old heaters and three replacement radiators was completed within one day. The actual duration depends on the existing installation, number of heaters and any electrical alterations required.

Are your electric radiator installations guaranteed?

Our workmanship is covered by a 12-month workmanship guarantee. Where MAYTRICS supplies the radiators or other products, the applicable manufacturer’s warranty also applies.

If you’re in Earley and considering replacing old storage heaters with modern smart electric radiators, get in touch and tell me what you currently have installed. For a larger conversion involving several heaters, I’ll normally arrange a site visit so I can assess the existing electrical supplies, discuss what you want from the new heating and provide a proper written quotation.

You’ll deal directly with me, Darren, from the initial enquiry through to the electrical work itself — with no AI receptionist or call centre in between.
