1) EV Charger Removal in Derby Green, Blackwater
A few months ago, one of my neighbours here in Derby Green, Blackwater contacted me because they were moving house and wanted to take their Tesla EV charger with them. Rather than leaving the charger behind, they wanted it safely disconnected and removed so the equipment could potentially be reinstalled at their new property.
I’m Darren May from MAYTRICS LIMITED. We’re NICEIC registered, Which? Trusted Trader endorsed and have over 20 years’ experience in the electrical industry. Being based locally, Derby Green is quite literally on our doorstep.
For this particular job, the customer sent me photos and videos of their existing Tesla installation via WhatsApp. That gave me enough information to provide an estimated cost without arranging an unnecessary site visit. The removal itself fell within our standard minimum charge of £138 including VAT, covering attendance and up to the first hour on site.
Back to top2) A Real EV Charger Removal in Derby Green
This particular job started with a phone call from somebody living on the same street.
The customer had noticed the MAYTRICS van locally and wanted to know whether I could remove the Tesla wall charger from the outside of their property before they moved home.
After the EV Charger Removal they weren’t looking to dispose of the charger. They wanted to retain as much of the existing equipment as possible so they could take it with them and potentially have it installed at their new property.
I was working on site when they phoned, so rather than trying to establish every detail during the call, I asked the customer to send me some photographs and videos through WhatsApp.
From those images, I could see enough of the installation to understand what was involved and provide an estimated cost remotely.
For a relatively straightforward job like this, that saved both of us an unnecessary visit simply to price the work.
Back to top3) Removing an EV Charger Isn’t Just Taking It Off the Wall
The visible charger is only one part of an EV charging installation.
Before we could remove the Tesla unit from the external wall, we first needed to deal safely with its electrical supply.
On the day of the appointment, we attended the property and isolated the EV charger circuit. We carried out our safe isolation procedure before starting any electrical disconnection work.
Once we had established that it was safe to proceed, we disconnected the electrical components associated with the EV charging circuit at the consumer unit.
We could then carefully remove the Tesla charging unit from the external wall.
The customer also wanted to retain the EV consumer unit and associated cable, so these were removed rather than being left behind or disposed of.
Because everything was going with the customer to their new home, we took care during the removal rather than treating the equipment as scrap.
Once removed, the charger, EV consumer unit and cable were placed into a box supplied by the customer, ready to be transported when they moved.
Back to top4) Can an Existing EV Charger Be Taken When You Move House?
Potentially, yes – and that’s exactly what this Derby Green customer wanted to do.
However, removing an existing charger and installing it at another property are two separate pieces of electrical work.
Just because a charger and cable were suitable for one property doesn’t automatically mean the same installation arrangement can simply be reproduced at the new address.
Before reinstalling an existing EV charger, I would need to assess the electrical installation at the new property and consider the requirements of that particular installation.
That includes the available electrical supply, proposed cable route, existing equipment and the suitability of the equipment being brought from the previous property.
In this case, the customer was pleased with the removal and asked us about reinstalling the Tesla charger at their new home.
We would assess that separately rather than assuming everything removed from the Derby Green property could automatically be reused in exactly the same way.
Back to top5) What Happens When You Book an EV Charger Removal?
5.0.1) You contact me directly
Customers who call MAYTRICS deal directly with me, Darren, rather than an AI receptionist or automated telephone system.
This particular customer phoned because they lived locally and had seen my van.
As I was working when they called, I asked them to send the details through WhatsApp.
5.0.2) Send photographs or a video
For straightforward EV charger removal enquiries, good photographs or a short video can often tell me a great deal about the existing installation.
For the Derby Green job, the information supplied remotely was enough for me to prepare an estimate without visiting first.
There will naturally be installations where I need more information or need to see something in person before confirming the work, but I don’t arrange a site survey simply for the sake of it.
5.0.3) You receive a written estimate
Once I’d reviewed the information, I prepared a written estimate through ServiceM8.
The customer could review this and accept it electronically.
Once accepted, the estimate became a work order and we arranged a suitable date for the removal.
5.0.4) We attend and safely disconnect the charger
On the agreed day, we attended, isolated the EV circuit and carried out our safe isolation procedure.
We then disconnected the relevant electrical components before removing the Tesla charger, EV consumer unit and cable.
5.0.5) We record the completed work
After completing the job, photographs were uploaded to the ServiceM8 job diary.
We also sent completion photographs to the customer via WhatsApp.
This provides a useful record of how the job was left, particularly when somebody is moving house and has a lot of other things to organise.
Back to top6) How Much Does EV Charger Removal Cost in Derby Green?
This particular job fell within our standard minimum charge of £138 including VAT.
Our minimum charge covers attendance and up to the first hour on site.
For this Tesla charger removal, that included the labour required to:
- Attend the property
- Safely isolate the EV charging circuit
- Carry out safe isolation
- Disconnect the associated electrical components
- Make the former EV supply redundant
- Remove the Tesla wall charger
- Remove the EV consumer unit
- Remove the associated cable
- Prepare the retained equipment for the customer
There were no additional material costs on this particular job because we weren’t installing anything new.
The charger and associated equipment belonged to the customer and were being retained for their move.
Not every EV charger removal will necessarily cost exactly £138.
The existing installation, accessibility, amount of equipment being removed and time required can all affect the cost.
Where the work can be completed within our first-hour minimum charge, as this job was, the labour can remain at £138 including VAT. If additional time or materials are required, these would be charged accordingly.
Back to top7) No New Materials Were Needed
This was effectively a removal job, so there was no reason to supply new sockets, switches, cables or EV equipment.
The customer wanted us to preserve what was already there.
We therefore removed the existing Tesla charger, EV consumer unit and cable and packaged them for transportation.
Although we didn’t supply materials, we did use our professional electrical test equipment as part of the safe isolation procedure.
Before disconnecting electrical equipment, it isn’t enough simply to operate a switch or assume a circuit is dead.
We carry out safe isolation before starting the disconnection work.
Back to top8) Why We Didn’t Throw the Existing Equipment Away
This sounds obvious, but there is an important difference between removing electrical equipment for disposal and removing it because somebody intends to reuse it.
Our customer wanted the Tesla charger for their new home.
That meant taking reasonable care during dismantling so the equipment wasn’t unnecessarily damaged during removal.
We kept the relevant equipment together and placed it in the customer’s box ready for the move.
Whether all of those components can ultimately be reused at the new property is something that would be determined when assessing the new installation.
The important point is that we didn’t make that decision prematurely by damaging or disposing of equipment the customer wanted to retain.
Back to top9) Common EV Charger Removal Mistakes
One of the most common issues I see across electrical work generally is people attempting DIY electrics without fully understanding what they’re working on.
There is plenty of electrical content available online. A YouTube video can show how somebody else carried out a particular task, but it doesn’t provide the training and practical experience needed to assess whether the same approach is appropriate for another electrical installation.
That’s particularly relevant with EV charging equipment because you’re dealing with a dedicated electrical circuit and associated protective equipment.
Removing a charger isn’t simply a case of switching it off and undoing the screws holding it to the wall.
The electrical supply needs to be correctly isolated and proven safe, and the remaining installation needs to be dealt with appropriately.
Back to top10) Poorly Priced Work Can Become Rushed Work
We also come across electrical work where the workmanship suggests that insufficient time has been allowed to complete the job properly.
There will always be differences between electricians’ prices, and a lower quotation doesn’t automatically mean poor workmanship.
However, pricing electrical work unrealistically low can create pressure to rush through jobs to make the numbers work.
That’s not how I want to operate MAYTRICS.
I’d rather allow enough time to carry out the required isolation, electrical work and checks properly than price purely to be the cheapest quote.
That applies whether we’re undertaking an EV charger removal, fault finding, additional sockets or a much larger electrical installation.
Back to top11) More Than Just EV Charger Work
Although this page is specifically about EV charger removal in Derby Green, we carry out a wide range of domestic electrical work locally.
This includes EV charger installations, consumer unit replacements and fuse board upgrades, circuit alterations, additional sockets, switches and lights, kitchen electrics, bathroom electrics, extractor fans, smoke detectors, doorbells and new installations.
We also carry out electrical work for garden rooms, outside sockets, outside lighting, security lights and motion-sensor lighting.
I haven’t included those services simply to suggest that every customer needs additional work. They’re useful if you’ve found this page by searching for an EV charger electrician near me but have other electrical work planned at the same property.
Where practical, you can mention the additional work when you enquire and I’ll advise whether it can sensibly be incorporated into the same visit.
Back to top12) Why Use MAYTRICS LIMITED?
I’ve worked within the electrical industry for more than 20 years, and MAYTRICS LIMITED is NICEIC registered and Which? Trusted Trader endorsed.
We have also built up over 200 Google reviews and approximately 240 Checkatrade reviews.
For me, though, one of the biggest differences is how customers communicate with the business.
When you telephone MAYTRICS, you deal directly with me.
There’s no AI receptionist trying to determine which department you need and no call centre passing a message through several people before it reaches the electrician.
That was exactly how our Derby Green job started: the customer phoned while I was working, I asked them to WhatsApp me the information I needed, I reviewed it and then prepared the estimate.
For smaller planned electrical jobs, I find that process works well.
Back to top13) Our Guarantees
Our electrical workmanship is covered by our 12-month workmanship guarantee.
Where MAYTRICS supplies new electrical products or materials, those products are covered by the applicable manufacturer’s warranty.
This particular Derby Green job didn’t involve supplying any new products because the purpose of the visit was to remove and retain the customer’s existing equipment.
If we subsequently reinstall an existing customer-owned EV charger at another property, the suitability of that equipment and the proposed new installation would first need to be assessed.
Back to top14) How Quickly Will We Respond?
We generally aim to respond to new enquiries the same day or within 24 hours of initial contact.
It’s important to distinguish response time from installation time.
A 24-hour response doesn’t mean we’re promising to attend and complete an EV charger removal within 24 hours.
Once I’ve seen the information about your installation, I’ll explain our availability and arrange a suitable date.
For planned work such as removing a charger before a house move, contacting us in advance is always preferable because it gives us more flexibility around your moving date.
Back to top15) EV Charger Removal for Homeowners, Landlords and Businesses
Although our Derby Green example involved a homeowner moving house, there are other situations where an EV charger may need to be removed.
A landlord or letting agent may need existing equipment disconnected as part of changes at a rental property, while a business may be changing its premises or electrical arrangements.
The exact scope can vary considerably.
That’s why photographs are particularly useful when making an initial enquiry. Rather than assuming your installation is identical to the Tesla installation described here, I can look at what’s actually installed and advise accordingly.
Back to top16) Local Electrical Work in Derby Green
Derby Green is particularly local to MAYTRICS, and this job came about simply because a neighbour had seen our van and knew there was an electrician nearby.
That doesn’t mean every job requires us to physically visit before providing a price.
As this example demonstrates, for some straightforward work, clear photographs and videos can provide enough information for us to prepare an estimate remotely.
If you’re moving property and wondering whether your existing EV charger can be removed and retained, send me some photographs of the installation.
I’ll take a look and advise on the next step.
Back to top17) FAQs
How much does it cost to remove an EV charger in Derby Green?
Our standard minimum charge is £138 including VAT, covering attendance and up to the first hour on site. Our recent Tesla charger removal in Derby Green was completed within that charge with no additional materials required, although more involved installations may cost more.
Can I take my EV charger with me when I move house?
Potentially, yes. Our Derby Green customer specifically asked us to remove their Tesla charger, EV consumer unit and cable so they could retain them for their new home, but any future reinstallation would need to be assessed separately.
Can you quote for EV charger removal from photographs?
Often we can provide an estimate from good photographs and videos, although it depends on the installation. For our Derby Green job, the customer sent everything through WhatsApp and we were able to price the removal without arranging a separate survey.
How long does it take to remove an EV charger?
A straightforward removal can sometimes be completed within our first-hour minimum charge, as our Derby Green Tesla removal was. The actual time depends on the existing installation, access and exactly which components you want us to remove.
Do you simply unscrew the EV charger from the wall?
No. We first isolate the electrical supply and carry out our safe isolation procedure before disconnecting the associated electrical equipment and removing the charger.
Can you reinstall my charger at my new property?
We can assess the new property and advise on installation separately. We can’t assume that the supply, cable route or electrical requirements at your new home will be the same as the property the charger came from.
Are you NICEIC registered?
Yes. MAYTRICS LIMITED is NICEIC registered and Which? Trusted Trader endorsed, and I have more than 20 years’ experience within the electrical industry.
If you’re moving home in Derby Green or Blackwater and want to take your existing EV charger with you, send me a few photographs or a short video of the installation. In many cases, as with the Tesla installation above, I can review the information remotely and provide an estimate without arranging an unnecessary initial visit.
You’ll deal directly with me, Darren, and I’ll explain what is involved, what the likely cost will be and our availability before you commit to anything.
