1) Replacement Light Fitting Installation in Deepcut, Surrey

A few years ago, I was contacted by a homeowner in Deepcut, Surrey who wanted to replace almost every standard ceiling light fitting throughout their property. There were around eight or nine fittings altogether, including two in the lounge, two in the dining room, one in the hallway, one on the landing and fittings across three bedrooms.

Most of the existing lights were standard 6-inch pendant fittings. The customer had already chosen and purchased their replacement light fittings, which included a mixture of three-way and four-way spotlight fittings and chandelier-style lights. We worked through the property room by room, safely isolating the relevant circuits, removing the existing pendants and installing the new customer-supplied fittings.

I’m Darren May, the electrician behind MAYTRICS LIMITED. I have more than 20 years’ experience in the electrical industry, and we’re NICEIC registered and Which? Trusted Trader endorsed. For planned lighting work like this, clear photographs will often give me enough information to provide a quotation without arranging an unnecessary survey first.

2) A Real Light Fitting Replacement Job in Deepcut

This particular job started following a recommendation on a local Facebook post.

The customer had seen MAYTRICS LIMITED recommended and gave us a call to discuss replacing several ceiling lights around their home.

After the initial conversation, I asked them to send photographs of the existing fittings through WhatsApp.

For straightforward replacement lighting work, photographs are extremely useful. They allow me to get a better understanding of what is currently fitted, how many lights are involved and what the customer intends to replace them with.

In this case, the information supplied was sufficient for us to prepare the quotation without needing to make a separate visit beforehand.

We created the job within our ServiceM8 job management system, prepared a written quotation and sent it over to the customer.

They accepted it straightaway, and we then arranged a convenient date for the work.

3) Replacing Eight or Nine Lights Throughout One Property

Once on site, we worked our way around the house rather than treating each fitting as a separate visit.

The existing fittings were predominantly straightforward pendant lights. These were being replaced with more decorative customer-supplied fittings.

The work covered:

  • Two light fittings in the lounge
  • Two light fittings in the dining room
  • One fitting in the hallway
  • One fitting on the landing
  • Replacement lighting across three bedrooms

The customer’s new fittings included a combination of three-way and four-way spotlight fittings together with chandelier-style lights.

Before fitting a customer-supplied light, we still need to make sure that what has been purchased is appropriate for the location and that the existing wiring can accommodate it.

The relevant lighting circuits were safely isolated before the existing pendants were removed. Each replacement fitting was then installed and the appropriate electrical checks carried out before the circuit was returned to service.

This particular installation was fairly straightforward and there were no underlying electrical faults that needed repairing.

The end result was a substantial visual change throughout the property without unnecessarily replacing or altering the existing lighting circuits.

3.1) What Happens When You Ask Us to Replace Several Light Fittings?

For planned work like this, the process is usually relatively simple.

3.1.1) You contact us

You can call, WhatsApp or use the enquiry form on our website.

When you telephone MAYTRICS LIMITED, you deal directly with me, Darren, rather than an AI receptionist or an automated call-handling service.

That means if you want to explain that you’ve bought nine different light fittings and want to know whether we can install them, you’re speaking directly with an electrician.

We generally aim to respond to enquiries the same day or within 24 hours.

That is our response time from the point of contact rather than a promise that we can attend and complete the work within 24 hours.

3.1.2) Send us photographs

For replacement lighting work, I’ll normally ask for photographs of the existing lights and, where possible, the new fittings you’ve purchased.

This can often save an unnecessary survey visit.

The Deepcut customer sent their photographs through WhatsApp, which gave us enough information to proceed with the quotation.

3.1.3) We prepare a written quotation

Once we have enough information, we create the job in ServiceM8 and prepare a written quotation for the agreed works.

This means the customer has a clear description of what we’re pricing before the appointment is booked.

3.1.4) You accept and we arrange a date

Once the quotation has been accepted, we agree a suitable appointment and confirm the booking.

3.1.5) Installation and testing

On the day, we safely isolate the relevant circuit, remove the existing fittings and install the replacements.

Once the work has been completed, we carry out the appropriate checks and make sure the new lighting operates correctly.

4) Do We Need to Visit Before Quoting?

Not always.

There’s a big difference between installing customer-supplied replacement fittings onto suitable existing wiring and designing an entirely new lighting installation.

For straightforward swaps, good photographs can often provide enough information for us to quote remotely.

If the pictures suggest something more involved, or if you’re asking us to install new lights in completely new positions, alter circuits or redesign the lighting, then we may need additional information or a site visit before pricing.

I’d rather establish that beforehand than arrive and discover the work is considerably different from what has been described.

5) How Long Does It Take to Replace Several Ceiling Lights?

A job involving several replacement fittings will typically take around two to three hours, although the actual time depends on the fittings and what we find when the existing lights are removed.

Some replacements are very quick.

Others can take longer because of the design of the fitting, the number of individual components that need assembling, the type of ceiling fixings required or the condition and arrangement of the existing wiring.

Chandelier-style fittings can also take longer than a basic pendant because there may be significantly more assembly and positioning involved.

The Deepcut project involved approximately eight or nine fittings throughout the house, so grouping them into one visit was a much more practical way of completing the upgrade.

6) Customer-Supplied Light Fittings

We’re perfectly happy for customers to purchase their own decorative light fittings.

In fact, with lighting it is extremely common because appearance is such a personal choice.

Customers will often have already found a particular chandelier, spotlight arrangement or decorative fitting that matches the rest of their room.

Our Deepcut customer had already purchased all of the main fittings, so this job was priced primarily as a labour-only installation.

That said, customer-supplied products still need to be suitable for the intended location and installation.

If something isn’t suitable, I’d rather explain that before trying to make it work simply because it has already been purchased.

7) What Is Included in the Price?

Our standard minimum charge for this type of work starts from £138 including VAT, covering up to the first hour on site.

For a larger job involving several fittings, the overall labour charge will depend on the amount of time allocated for the installation.

With the Deepcut project, the customer supplied the main lighting products themselves.

Our labour included:

  • Safely isolating the relevant lighting circuits
  • Removing the existing pendant fittings
  • Installing the customer-supplied replacements
  • Making the electrical connections
  • Carrying out the appropriate checks afterwards
  • Confirming the fittings were operating correctly

We only needed to supply a small amount of installation material ourselves.

This included items such as WAGO connectors, screws and suitable fixings where required.

These are the types of essential items we routinely carry so we don’t need to stop a straightforward job for the sake of a connector or fixing.

Materials supplied by us are charged in addition where applicable.

8) Warranty on Customer-Supplied Fittings

There is an important distinction between our installation work and the product itself.

Our 12-month workmanship guarantee still applies to the work we carry out.

However, we cannot provide a product guarantee or warranty on a light fitting that the customer has purchased independently.

If a customer-supplied chandelier develops an internal manufacturing fault, for example, the product warranty remains with the retailer or manufacturer from which it was purchased.

Where MAYTRICS LIMITED supplies a product, it is covered by the applicable manufacturer’s warranty.

9) Materials and Accessories We Prefer to Supply

Where we’re supplying electrical accessories ourselves, we don’t generally base our choice around whichever product is cheapest.

Equally, we don’t believe every customer needs the most expensive premium range available.

For most general electrical accessories, we favour a good-quality mid-range product that gives a sensible balance between reliability, appearance and price.

For sockets, switches and similar accessories, we regularly use Click by Scolmore.

We’ve installed these products across many different jobs and have found them to offer good quality without unnecessarily pushing up the overall cost to the customer.

Very cheap electrical accessories can sometimes be poorly manufactured, less pleasant to work with and less durable.

I’d rather install products we’re comfortable putting our name against while still keeping the overall quotation competitive.

For decorative lighting, however, we appreciate customers will often want to make their own choice. That’s why we’re happy to install customer-supplied fittings subject to them being suitable.

10) New-Build Electrical Installations in Deepcut

The property involved in this particular job was a relatively new-build home, and we didn’t encounter any problems with the original electrical installation while carrying out the lighting replacements.

Deepcut has seen substantial residential development, including housing built on former MOD land.

With relatively new properties, we would generally expect the original electrical installation to have been designed and installed to the standards applicable when the property was constructed.

That doesn’t necessarily mean every piece of electrical work carried out afterwards will be correct.

As homeowners make changes over time, we still come across DIY additions and alterations that haven’t been installed or tested properly.

11) DIY Lighting Mistakes We Come Across

Replacing a light can appear to be one of the simpler DIY electrical jobs.

Occasionally it is straightforward, but that doesn’t mean every ceiling rose contains only one obvious live and one obvious neutral.

Existing lighting points can contain a number of conductors performing different functions, particularly where the ceiling point forms part of the lighting circuit connections.

If conductors are disconnected without first understanding what they do, it can result in lights no longer operating correctly, circuit breakers tripping or conductors being connected incorrectly.

We regularly come across DIY electrical work and poorly completed alterations in the wider areas we cover.

With the Deepcut job described here, there wasn’t anything wrong with the existing wiring. The customer sensibly asked us to replace the fittings rather than attempting eight or nine alterations themselves.

12) Why Customers Choose MAYTRICS for Planned Lighting Work

For a straightforward lighting replacement, you probably don’t need pages of promises about us being the “best electrician in Deepcut”.

I’d rather give customers information they can actually use when comparing electricians.

I’m the electrician you deal with from the initial enquiry onwards.

MAYTRICS LIMITED is:

  • NICEIC registered
  • Which? Trusted Trader endorsed
  • Run by an electrician with more than 20 years’ experience
  • Backed by over 200 Google reviews
  • Backed by around 240 Checkatrade reviews
  • Covered by a 12-month workmanship guarantee

We also provide written quotations through ServiceM8 so you can see exactly what has been allowed for before the appointment.

We’re not trying to win every job simply by being the cheapest.

Our focus is allowing enough time to complete the work properly, safely isolate circuits, make suitable connections, install the fitting neatly and carry out the appropriate checks afterwards.

13) Other Electrical Work We Carry Out in Deepcut

Although this page focuses on replacing ceiling light fittings, we carry out a much wider range of planned electrical work in Deepcut and the surrounding area.

That includes additional sockets, replacement switches, new lighting, circuit alterations, kitchen electrics, bathroom electrics, extractor fans, smoke detectors, doorbells, outside sockets, outside lighting, security lights and motion-sensor lighting.

We also undertake larger projects such as consumer unit replacements, fuse board upgrades, new installations, garden room electrics and EV charger installations.

So if you’ve found this page after searching for an electrician near me to replace light fittings, but you have a few other electrical jobs you’d like completed at the same time, send them over when making your enquiry.

In many cases, it makes more sense to group several smaller jobs together into one scheduled visit.

14) FAQs

How much does it cost to replace a ceiling light in Deepcut?

Our standard minimum charge starts from £138 including VAT, covering up to the first hour on site, with materials charged in addition where required. If you have several fittings to replace, send us photographs and we can usually provide a quotation based on the amount of work involved.

Can you install light fittings that I have bought myself?

Yes. We regularly install customer-supplied lighting, including spotlights, chandeliers and decorative fittings, provided they are suitable for the proposed installation.

Are customer-supplied lights covered by your guarantee?

Our 12-month workmanship guarantee covers our installation work, but we cannot provide a product warranty on an item purchased by the customer. Any manufacturing warranty remains with the retailer or manufacturer.

Do you need to visit my property before quoting?

Not necessarily. For straightforward replacement lighting, photographs sent via WhatsApp will often give us enough information to prepare a quotation without a separate survey, just as they did for our Deepcut customer.

How long does it take to replace several light fittings?

A typical multi-fitting visit may take approximately two to three hours, although this varies depending on the type of fittings and existing wiring. Decorative chandeliers and multi-way spotlight fittings can take longer to assemble and install than basic pendant replacements.

What happens if you find a problem with the existing wiring?

If we uncover an unexpected problem, we’ll explain what we’ve found before carrying out work outside the agreed scope wherever possible. We won’t simply conceal an issue behind the new fitting and move on.

Are you NICEIC registered?

Yes. MAYTRICS LIMITED is NICEIC registered and Which? Trusted Trader endorsed, and I have more than 20 years’ experience within the electrical industry together with City & Guilds Level 3 electrical qualifications.

If you’ve bought new ceiling lights and want them professionally installed in your Deepcut property, send me a few photographs of the existing fittings and the replacements you’ve purchased. For straightforward jobs, that’s often enough for me to prepare a quotation without arranging a separate survey.
