1) Garden Room & Outbuilding Electrics in Crowthorne
I’m Darren May, the electrician behind MAYTRICS LIMITED. We design, install, test and certify new electrical supplies for garden rooms, sheds and other outbuildings throughout Crowthorne, from relatively simple socket and lighting installations through to larger projects requiring a completely new supply from the house.
A good example is a project we completed for a repeat customer in Crowthorne last summer. Their garden room was approximately 50 metres from the house and was being created as a dedicated sewing, arts and crafts room for the customer’s wife. Directly behind it was a large shed that also needed power and lighting, while the surrounding decking area required external sockets and decorative festoon lighting.
This wasn’t simply a case of running an extension cable down the garden. We designed a new electrical supply using 16mm² three-core SWA cable, installed a separate consumer unit at the garden room and created circuits serving both buildings and the outside entertainment area. The complete installation took approximately two and a half days.
For planned projects like this, we normally carry out a site survey first and provide a fixed-price quotation based on the agreed specification. Garden room electrical installations generally start from around £2,000, although the final price will depend on the distance from the house, electrical load, number of sockets and lights, cable route and exactly how the building will be used.
Back to top2) A Real Garden Room Installation in Crowthorne
This particular project came from a customer we had already worked for approximately two years previously.
Our first contact with them had actually been through a kitchen and bathroom company. We carried out electrical work associated with their kitchen and bathroom and also investigated a fault on one of the existing ring circuits.
At the end of the job, the customer asked whether they could keep our details, so I left them one of our business cards.
Nearly two years later, they still had it.
The customer contacted me directly on WhatsApp to explain that they were having a garden room and large shed installed at the back of the property and asked whether we would be interested in providing a quotation for the electrical work.
Because of the scale of the project, this wasn’t something I wanted to price from photographs alone.
I arranged to visit the property so I could see the proposed cable route, assess the existing electrical installation and discuss exactly what the customer wanted from both buildings.
Back to top3) Designing the Supply Before Pricing the Job
One of the first things I needed to establish was the distance involved.
I measured the route from the existing consumer unit in the house to the new garden room and then the onward route between the garden room and shed.
The garden room itself was approximately 50 metres from the property.
That matters because cable sizing isn’t based simply on the fact that electricity is being supplied to an outbuilding.
We need to consider factors such as:
- The length of the cable run
- The expected electrical load
- Voltage drop
- The method of installation
- Protective devices
- Earthing arrangements
- The circuits required at the far end
- Potential future requirements
For this particular installation, we used a 16mm² three-core SWA — steel wire armoured — cable from the existing consumer unit in the house to the garden room.
At the garden room, we installed a separate four-useable-way consumer unit to distribute the supply to the different circuits.
The finished installation included four double sockets within the garden room, lighting, four double sockets within the shed, shed lighting, a circuit supplying the shed from the garden room, an external socket for the barbecue and entertainment area and external decorative lighting.
The customer also supplied festoon lights that we installed around the decking area.
Back to top4) Designing the Garden Room Around How It Will Actually Be Used
Before designing a garden room electrical installation, I want to know what the building is actually going to be used for.
That can significantly change the specification.
This Crowthorne garden room was going to become a dedicated sewing, arts and crafts room.
Rather than simply putting one socket and one light in the building because technically that would provide electricity, we discussed how the room would be used and installed four double sockets together with suitable lighting.
Directly behind the garden room was the customer’s shed, which also needed to become a genuinely usable space rather than simply having a temporary supply run into it.
We therefore provided four double sockets and lighting within the shed as well.
The outside socket alongside the garden room gave the customer convenient power around the decking and barbecue area without needing to run extension leads from inside the house or garden building.
The festoon lighting then completed the entertainment area.
The result was an electrical installation designed around the property and the customer’s actual requirements rather than simply getting power from one end of the garden to the other.
Back to top5) Our Process for Garden Room Electrics in Crowthorne
5.0.1) Initial enquiry
For this project, the customer contacted me directly through WhatsApp because they were already a previous MAYTRICS customer.
For new customers, you can contact us by telephone, WhatsApp or through our website enquiry form.
We generally aim to respond within the same day or within 24 hours of receiving an enquiry. This is our response time rather than a promise that the installation itself can be completed within 24 hours.
5.0.2) Site survey
With larger installations such as garden rooms and outbuildings, I normally arrange a site visit before issuing a fixed quotation.
This allows me to look at the existing consumer unit, understand the proposed cable route and discuss the customer’s specification properly.
On our Crowthorne project, I made detailed notes and measured the route from the house to the garden room and from there to the shed.
Those measurements allowed us to calculate the cabling and other materials properly rather than trying to estimate the job without sufficient information.
5.0.3) Discussing the specification
We then agreed what the customer required within each building.
For this project, that included sockets, internal lighting, external power, a supply for the shed and customer-supplied festoon lighting.
This stage is important because adding additional requirements halfway through an installation can alter the design, labour and material costs.
I’d rather establish as much as possible before we start.
5.0.4) Fixed-price quotation
Once we had gathered the information, we prepared a detailed written quotation covering the agreed specification.
The customer openly told me they were obtaining several quotations.
Once ours was sent, however, they accepted it straightaway.
They later explained that we weren’t the cheapest quotation, but we weren’t the most expensive either.
What they felt we offered was value for money based on our previous work for them, the information available on our website, our communication throughout the quotation stage and how we conducted ourselves while discussing the project at their property.
That’s exactly how I prefer to win this type of work.
We don’t deliberately price jobs below their proper cost simply to fill the diary.
5.0.5) Installation
Once everything had been agreed and scheduled, we completed the installation over approximately two and a half days.
That included installing the long SWA supply from the house, the consumer unit within the garden room and the individual circuits serving both outbuildings and the external areas.
5.0.6) Testing, certification and notification
Once the installation was complete, we carried out the appropriate inspection and electrical testing.
The relevant electrical certification was then completed, together with Building Control notification where required.
For new electrical installations, the testing and certification are part of completing the job properly rather than optional extras added at the end.
Back to top6) How Much Do Garden Room Electrics Cost in Crowthorne?
As a general starting point, a professionally installed garden room electrical supply will typically begin from around £2,000.
However, there isn’t a sensible single price that applies to every garden room.
A small building relatively close to the house requiring one circuit, a couple of sockets and basic lighting is very different from the Crowthorne project described above.
That installation involved approximately 50 metres of armoured cable, a separate consumer unit, two individual garden buildings, eight double sockets between them, lighting, external power and festoon lighting.
Factors that can affect the final cost include:
- Distance between the house and garden building
- Cable route
- Required SWA cable size
- Number of circuits
- Number of sockets
- Internal lighting
- Outside sockets
- Outside lighting
- Whether another outbuilding also requires a supply
- Existing consumer unit and electrical installation
- Customer specification
- Additional electrical loads
- Groundwork or cable-route requirements
For this reason, larger installations are normally surveyed before we issue the quotation.
Back to top7) What Is Included in Our Fixed Price?
Once we have surveyed the installation and agreed the specification, we will normally provide a fixed-price quotation for the proposed work.
Depending on the agreed project, this includes:
- Labour
- Materials supplied by MAYTRICS LIMITED
- Cable and associated electrical equipment
- Installation of the agreed circuits
- Consumer unit and protective devices where specified
- Sockets, switches and lighting included within the quotation
- Electrical inspection and testing
- Certification
- Building Control notification where required
- 12-month workmanship guarantee
- Applicable manufacturer warranties on equipment supplied by us
This gives the customer a clear price for the agreed specification before the installation begins.
If the customer changes the specification or requests additional electrical work after the quotation has been accepted, we discuss the additional cost before proceeding wherever possible.
Back to top8) Customer-Supplied Electrical Products
We’re happy to incorporate customer-supplied products into an installation where they are suitable.
On the Crowthorne project, for example, the customer supplied the festoon lighting they wanted installed around the decking and barbecue area.
Our workmanship installing a customer-supplied product remains covered, but we cannot provide a product warranty or guarantee for something we haven’t supplied.
If a customer-supplied item develops a manufacturing fault, the product warranty remains between the customer and the manufacturer or retailer they purchased it from.
Products supplied directly by MAYTRICS LIMITED benefit from the applicable manufacturer’s warranty alongside our workmanship guarantee.
Back to top9) The Materials and Brands We Prefer
We don’t generally build our quotations around the cheapest electrical products available.
Equally, I don’t believe every project needs expensive designer electrical accessories.
For most installations, we prefer good-quality mid-range products that offer a sensible balance between reliability, appearance and cost.
For sockets, switches and general accessories, we regularly install Click by Scolmore.
We’ve used these products across many different installations and have found them dependable while still allowing us to keep the overall project cost competitive.
Some very cheap accessories can be more difficult to install neatly, have poorer build quality and may not provide the finish or longevity we want to associate with our work.
If I’m going to supply a product and stand behind the installation, I want to be comfortable with what we’re fitting.
For larger garden room projects, the same thinking applies to the consumer unit, protective devices, cabling and other components.
We select them based on the electrical design rather than whichever item happens to be cheapest at the wholesaler.
Back to top10) Why the Cheapest Garden Room Quote Isn’t Always the Best Comparison
We regularly see the consequences of DIY electrical work and poorly priced installations.
Sometimes homeowners attempt electrical alterations themselves in an effort to reduce the overall cost.
We also encounter projects where another electrician appears to have underpriced the work significantly simply to win the job.
The problem isn’t that one electrician is cheaper than another.
The problem arises when the price doesn’t allow sufficient time or materials to complete the installation correctly.
Something then has to give.
That can mean cheaper materials, rushed installation, inadequate testing or corners being cut elsewhere.
A garden room supply is a particularly poor place to take that approach.
Running power 50 metres down a garden isn’t simply a matter of buying a length of armoured cable and connecting it at both ends.
The circuit needs to be designed around the electrical load, cable length, voltage drop, protective devices, installation method and earthing arrangements.
The equipment at the garden room also needs to be appropriate for what the customer intends to use.
Our Crowthorne customer obtained several quotations and still chose us despite confirming we weren’t the cheapest.
For us, that’s a better fit than trying to win every enquiry solely on price.
Back to top11) What Makes MAYTRICS LIMITED Different?
When you contact MAYTRICS LIMITED, you deal directly with me, Darren.
I answer our telephone enquiries myself rather than sending customers through an AI receptionist or automated call-handling service.
That means when you’re trying to explain a proposed 50-metre garden room supply, an existing consumer unit or how you intend to use an outbuilding, you’re speaking with the electrician who understands the installation and will be involved in carrying out the work.
I have more than 20 years’ experience in the electrical industry and hold City & Guilds Level 3 electrical qualifications.
MAYTRICS LIMITED is also:
- NICEIC registered
- Which? Trusted Trader endorsed
- Part P registered
- Backed by more than 200 Google reviews
- Backed by approximately 240 Checkatrade reviews
Our workmanship is covered by a 12-month guarantee, and products supplied by us carry the applicable manufacturer’s warranty.
We don’t claim to be the cheapest electrical contractor in Crowthorne, and that isn’t what our quotations are designed around.
Our focus is quality workmanship, correct electrical design, compliance, customer service and completing the installation properly.
Back to top12) More Than Garden Room Electrics
Although this page focuses on garden rooms and outbuilding supplies in Crowthorne, we also carry out a broad range of electrical work locally.
This includes consumer unit replacements and fuse board upgrades, new circuits, circuit alterations, sockets, switches, lighting, kitchen electrics, bathroom electrics, extractor fans, smoke detectors, doorbells, outside sockets, outside lighting, security lights and motion-sensor lighting.
We also install electrical supplies associated with other planned improvements, including electric vehicle chargers where appropriate.
If you’ve searched for a garden room electrician near me because you’re currently planning an outbuilding, the best time to speak to us is often before the interior is completely finished.
That gives us an opportunity to discuss the cable route, socket locations, lighting and any future requirements before everything becomes harder to access.
Back to top13) FAQs
How much does it cost to install electricity in a garden room in Crowthorne?
Our garden room electrical installations generally start from around £2,000, but each project is individually priced. Distance from the house, cable size, number of sockets and lights, consumer unit requirements and the customer’s specification can all significantly affect the final cost.
Do you need to visit before quoting?
For larger garden room and outbuilding installations, usually yes. On our recent Crowthorne project, I measured an approximately 50-metre route and discussed all the requirements before specifying the 16mm² SWA supply and preparing the fixed-price quotation.
How long does a garden room electrical installation take?
A straightforward project may take around two days, although more involved installations can take longer. Our Crowthorne garden room and shed project took approximately two and a half days because it included two buildings, a long incoming supply, a new consumer unit, sockets, lighting and external power.
What size cable do I need for my garden room?
There isn’t one cable size that is suitable for every garden room. We calculate this based on factors including cable length, expected load, installation method and voltage drop; the approximately 50-metre Crowthorne installation required a 16mm² three-core SWA cable.
Will I receive electrical certification?
Yes. New electrical work is inspected and tested and we provide the appropriate electrical certification for the work completed. We also deal with Building Control notification where the work requires it.
Can I supply my own lights or sockets?
Yes, subject to the products being suitable for the proposed installation. We can install customer-supplied equipment, but we cannot provide a product warranty on items we haven’t supplied; our workmanship remains covered.
Are you NICEIC registered?
Yes. MAYTRICS LIMITED is NICEIC registered and Which? Trusted Trader endorsed, and I have over 20 years of electrical industry experience together with City & Guilds Level 3 electrical qualifications.
If you’re planning a garden room, shed or outbuilding in Crowthorne and need a new electrical supply, get in touch before everything is finished and I’ll help you work through what you actually need.
